Introduction

There has been an exponential increase of interest in frankincense resin in the West at present. This is mainly because many recent studies have highlighted the health benefits of this resin. People from different civilizations knew about it from practical experience. It was a remedy passed down orally through generations. Only recently has the world woken up to the traditional practices. Doctors, nutritionists and scientists alike have realized that the benefits are not just conventional beliefs but it can be proved scientifically! This article will help you gain valuable knowledge regarding the use and benefits of Frankincense.

Frankincense Resin- Uses and Benefits

Frankincense for Arthritis

Frankincense contains a high amount of boswellic acid, which acts as an anti-inflammatory agent. Boswellia Carterii and Boswellia Serrata are particularly good for Arthritis. They reduce inflammation by inhibiting leukocyte elastase and degrading glycosaminoglycans found in joints with damages caused by inflammation. Boswellic acid also inhibits 5-lipoxygenase and prevents the release of leukotrienes. For this reason, it is effective in ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, bronchitis, and sinusitis.

Frankincense Resin for Digestive problems

The book "Ethnoflora of the Soqotra of Archipelago" by Anthony G. Miller describes that Boswellia are often recognised as one of the most impactful therapeutic plants used for curing an upset stomach."

Frankincense, in particular Boswellia Carterii, is very effective. It functions as a stimulant and a gas-repellent, increasing the flow of digestive fluids and enhancing the appetite. A combination of these factors results in improved digestion and absorption.

Additionally, 5-lipoxygenase is inhibited by boswellic acid, preventing the release of leukotrienes. Thus, ulcerative colitis and irritable bowel syndrome may be treated well with it. Medical College in Jammu, India and the University of Tübingen, Germany, undertook cooperative medical research in the year 2000 to explore the efficiency of Boswellia Serrata against Chronic Colitis. Inflammation of the colon's lining is a symptom of chronic colitis, which is a chronic digestive condition.

Some of the patients who have chronic colitis were given Frankincense (Boswellia Serrata), and the others were given Sulfasalazine to act as a control. Three times a day for six weeks, 300mg of Boswellia Serrata resin was given to the patients in the first study. Those in the other study who received Sulfasalazine were given one gramme three times daily for six weeks as part of their treatment plan. Hemoglobin, serum iron, calcium, phosphorus, proteins, total leukocytes, and eosinophils were among the many blood tests performed on the patients.

The final outcome was unbelievable! Only 60% of patients in the control group exhibited improvement in any of the criteria, but the other group treated with Frankincense showed 90% improvement. 70% of patients treated with the resin went into remission, but only 40% of those given Sulfasalazine went into remission in the control group. This shows the potential of Frankincense in treating chronic colitis.

Antibacterial activity of Frankincense

Antibacterial properties is found in the resins of frankincense. Phenolic acid is likely responsible for the resin's antibacterial properties. By lowering microbial competition with the host for nutrients and endogenous nitrogen losses, phenolic compounds in organic acids increase protein and energy efficiency and yields. Subclinical infections are less common, and immune mediators are secreted at lower levels as a result. It also cuts down on ammonia production.

Dr. K.H. Baser and Dr. B. Demeirici from Anadolu University in Turkey and Dr Aman Dekebo and Dr Ermias Dagne from Addis Ababa University conducted thorough laboratory tests. They discovered that Boswellia Carterii and Boswellia Serrata have high antibacterial activity against bacteria such as Bacillus, a gram-positive bacteria.

Aqueous extract of Boswellia Serrata exhibited a significant area of inhibition against Proteus Vulgaris and Proteus Aeruginosa in a study by the Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine. Against all Gram-positive bacterial infections, Boswellia Carterii chemicals were shown to be effective.

E.coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa are both resistant to Boswellia Carterii, according to a study from the University of Palermo in Italy. All pathogens were inhibited and Proteus Aeruginosa showed the greatest sensitivity.

Anti-Fungal Properties of Frankincense:

Tests on the essential oils of Boswellia Carterii, Boswellia Papyrifera, Boswellia Serrata, and the resin of the Boswellia Rivae plant were carried out by researchers at the University of Palermo in Italy. They found that they all had a high level of action against fungal strains.

Inhibitory concentration values were as low as 6.2μg/ml. In other words, it only required 6.2μg to be put in 1 ml to see an effect on the fungus. The antifungal effect of Frankincense resin essential oils was particularly significant on both Candida albicans and Candida tropicalis. Essential oil's antifungal properties were found by Ali Ridha and Bozena Kiczorowska of the University of Life Sciences in Lublin, Poland.

B. carterii essential oil significantly inhibited the development and generation of aflatoxin by an Aspergillus flavus food-borne toxigenic strain. In addition, it demonstrated strong antioxidant activity against 12 food-borne pathogenic moulds.

Anti-inflammatory Properties of Frankincense:

In Punjab, India, the Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences discovered that boswellic acid inhibits 5-lipoxygenase activity in a particular, non-reducing manner. They exert their effects by directly interfering with 5-lipoxygenase or preventing its translocation. Boswellic acid's anti-inflammatory properties are attributed to the inhibition of 5-lipoxygenase, which inhibits the production of leukotrienes.

Boswellic acids are responsible for suppressing 5-lipoxygenase in a non-redox and non-competitive way. This leads to the suppression of leukotriene production in neutrophilic granulocytes. Furthermore, they may block elastase in leukocytes, promote apoptosis, and reduce topoisomerases of leukoma and glioma cell lines.

As you can see, these products are embedded with immense values and benefits. They are the storehouse of solutions to several common problems in the present society.
